What Are Content Management Systems (CMS)?

A CMS (Content Management System) is a simple, yet effective way to manage and organise the content of your website. A CMS allows you to log on to edit pages and add updates yourself so you can do everything in your own time as needed. We offer full training and support in how to use your new site although if you are familiar with using a word processor, you will find using a CMS quite similar. A CMS based site is a very cost effective way of keeping your website up to date as you can add information yourself, rather than having the added cost of our updating service.

Two of the main CMS we use, Joomla and WordPress are both free. You can also extend the functionality of your website by various templates, add-ons and extensions (such as slideshows, multimedia, ecommerce) available for each CMS but as they are written by independent developers, they can cost money although most are relatively cheap.

While it is quite straightforward to use once it has been set up, a CMS does need to be set up properly to make sure the website is secure and looks and functions in the way you need. It will also need to be set up correctly so it will be found in search engines. We are very experienced in all these aspects and can take care of the entire setting up process for you, as well as ensuring that it is continually maintained and updated for security as well as having regular backups. We take care of all of this so all you need to do is provide the content and then you can update to your heart’s content!

We also have our own CMS which we developed via our Chicsoft software division as a bespoke option. The three main CMS we use are outlined below.

Joomla CMS websites

According to the Jooma website:

"Joomla is an award-winning content management system (CMS), which enables you to build websites and powerful online applications. Many aspects, including its ease-of-use and extensibility, have made Joomla the most popular website software available. Best of all, Joomla is an open source solution that is freely available to everyone."

Joomla is highly extendable and comprehensive content management system which works well for everything from a simple 5 page website to complex ecommerce systems. It is one of the most popular CMS and has an extremely large range of independent templates, add-ons and extensions available to be bought to extend the functionality of your website.

WordPress websites

According to the Wordpress website:

"WordPress is web software you can use to create a beautiful website or blog. We like to say that WordPress is both free and priceless at the same time."

WordPress was originally intended as a system mainly for blogging but has now become one of the largest CMS used worldwide. WordPress is extremely popular and known for its ease of use and although for some it is not as “serious” as perhaps Joomla or Drupal, WordPress is still very widely used by many major companies and projects.

Chicsoft Thor CMS system

We developed our bespoke CMS Thor via our Chicsoft software division in 2009. It has been used on a number of our websites with great success as it is customisable with full CSS control and therefore total control of the design implementation. It has some excellent built-in SEO features including on-the-fly instant creation of search engine friendly (SEF) URLs, auto sitemaps and many more features including an internal user/management system. We have recently added the ability to include Google maps, PDFs and videos and more featured are planned. Since we began adapting it we have streamlined and standardised many parts of the system so new features can be added to all installations.

You can see Thor in use on websites such as Finding Cyprus and Cyprus Anytime. Thor is available on a bespoke, customised basis for our clients, please contact us for more information and a quote.
