What is a .tel?

It is a new TLD (top level domain) created last year. Initialy they were expensive to reserve and are now on general release.

Do I need it?

How sucessfull they will be only time will tell. However as with all domain names if you dont get it you run the risk of someone else getting it and either you cant get access in the future or they try to re-sell it to you at a higher price.

What do they do and what does a website cost for them?

They are designed merely to contain contact details and most companies maintaining the system have special software in place where this information is gathered and it must then be displayed in a certain format.
